We've been watching downloadable-movies-on-demand via CinemaNow and MovieLink.  Prices and quality are on par with VHS rentals, plus no more trips to Blockbuster and no such thing as a late fee!

We stopped updating this page in 2004, but see below for what we think are, pre-2004, the best movies, good movies, best theater shows, best books, and best ski areas!  Read on!

We've been utilizing RottenTomatoes to help us decide on good movies & rentals.  They've been reasonably accurate!  Give them a try!

Best Japanese Anime movie::  'Spirited Away'

Best Hong Kong martial arts spectacular (subtitled) movie:  'Hero' and  'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon'

Best creepy movie (watch after dark, no interruptions!):  Mothman Prophecies

Best funny/clever movie about bank robbers:  Bandits  

Best movie about a wedding (Indian):  Monsoon Wedding

Best feature-length computer animated movie:  Shrek

Best limited-release 'sleeper' movie with major twists:  Memento

Best movie dealing with extreme, violent, racism in an amazingly intelligent and gripping fashion:  American History X

Best touching/deep life-story movie:  Cider House Rules 

Best scary, ghost movie:  Sixth Sense

Best twisted movie:  Being John Malkovich

Best con-artist movie:  Spanish Prisoner

Best foreign film where ya gotta read subtitles:  Life is Beautiful

Best sci-fi action movie ever:  The Matrix

Best moody war movie which isn't really about war itself:  Apocalypse Now

Best movie about mid-life crises:  American Beauty

Good creepy horrific movies:  The Cell, The Exorcist, Jacob's Ladder

The Best Theater Shows:  

Best Performance Art & Social Commentary:  Blue Man Group (now playing in Vegas...for original, smaller, more personal show, see it in New York)

Best Operetta/Drama:  Les Miserables (playing in New York for 13 years now...best to know the music before seeing the show)

Best Dance/Performance:  De La Guarda (the flying acrobatic dance troupe from Brazil)

Best of the 5 different Cirque Du Soleil shows:  'O' (at the Bellagio in Vegas)

The Best Books:   

Best future-universe science fiction adventure:  This Alien Shore, & Madness Season, both by C.S. Friedman

Best gripping underseas adventure:  Sphere, by Michael Crichton

Best Magic, Fantasy, & Fun:  Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling

The Best Skiing:

Best have-everything resort:  Squaw Valley at Lake Tahoe (27 lifts, ice skating, rock climbing, snow tubin', restaurants, bars, hot tub & swim lagoon, bungee jumping, movie theater, lodging village)

Best bowl skiing:  Alpine Meadows at Lake Tahoe 

Best Lessons:  Alpine Meadows at Lake Tahoe (uhh, no guarantees...but many were happy with them)

Best long, intermediate cruising runs:  Northstar at Lake Tahoe

Best huge-sized resort:  Whistler/Blackcomb in British Columbia (longest intermediate run is over 4 miles, top-to-bottom is 1 MILE vertical--no kidding!)

Best views:  Heavenly at Tahoe
