    • Geocaching  What the heck is geocaching?!  It is a way to add a fun goal to your hiking trips!  With the aid of any GPS unit and coordinates and clues from the geocache site, you go hike and find the "treasure" caches.  Each cache contains widgets & doohickeys for you to trade, a logbook to say "HI" to other cache finders, and a disposable camera.  WE HAVE PLACED TWO 'TRAVEL BUGS' in GEOCACHES in ALASKA!  Hit 'Track Travel Bugs', 'Advanced Search', type keyword 'Sheppy' or 'Whee Cat', then click on their pages to see what caches they've traveled to.   9/04 update:  Sheppy has traveled 6000+ miles to date!

    • How Stuff Works   Marshall Brain (his real name?) is great at explaining not only how mechanical gadgets work (engines, thermostats, water towers, etc), but also things like the stock market, sunscreen, NATO, and the internet.  Great reading!  Plus you can ask him questions in the "Question of the Day" section.  We learned that the POP in Poprocks is from tiny bubbles of 600 psi air bursting out of the candy as it dissolves in your mouth!

    • Consumerreview.com  Zillions of reviews/comments on gadgets by actual consumers!

    • Shopper.com  After finding exactly which product you want on zdnet.com, go here to do an instant comparison of prices from dozens of internet shops at once!

    • Consumer Reports (subscription required) Before you buy appliances, tires, corn dogs, cars, paint, backyard pools, automobile batteries & tires, smoke detectors, room heaters, BBQ grills, etc., get an online subscription to CR and search their archives.  CR is a GREAT & reliable source of info.  They don't accept advertising.

    • Bay Area Consumer's Checkbook (subscription required).  Uses 100% local customer surveys to establish in-depth ratings of types of SF Bay Area businesses (restaurants, veterinarians, auto repair places, etc.).  They compile surveys into nice charts, give some tips & background info about that industry, and are no-nonsense.
