This page NEW in Sep 2006 Click on the pics to enlarge In early May, compelled by reports of HUMONGOUS high water flows, we went to Yosemite to check out the ginormous waterfalls. Our drive in got much longer when we discovered that in April a HUGE rockslide plopped itself down on Hwy 140, covering a 1000' section 300' deep in rocks! As of Sep, 2006, the Highway is STILL closed but there is now a one-lane, alternating direction bypass that they built on the other side of the Merced. We opted to go around to the south entrance and checked out the beautiful steam locomotive at the Sugar Pine Railroad: We stayed at the most-excellent Peregrine/Falcon's Nest B&B in Yosemite West (up Hwy 41, 25 minutes from the valley floor). Cam enjoyed watching Ravens, the TV, and putting stuff into the fridge. The room was complete with fireplace and giant jetted tub: But on to the WATERFALLS! Yes, they were huge! Yosemite Falls and the flooded meadows and pathways below. The water was only 1 foot below the road in some places! Bridalveil Falls was anything but a 'wispy veil'. The flow was so huge that the parking area was flooded and the viewing area became another branch of the river. The Merced River at Happy Isles and again a few miles downstream from the entrance on Hwy 140: It was rainy but beautiful at Tuolumne Grove. Them's some BIG trees! |
