This page NEW in Sep 2006 Click on the pics to enlarge In late April, we went on a 10-day VACATION to the island of MAUI! We got off the plane, headed over to the town of Kihei, and HIT the beach (Kama'Ole II) to enjoy the beautiful tropical weather right away. The next day, we did a driving tour around the northwest portion of the island. First stop, Lahaina Town and the Sugar Cane Train (we didn't do the ride because Cam was a bit scared of the LOUD, hissing train & whistle): The westernmost coast was rugged and beautiful. The tiny one lane road along several miles of the most rugged cliffs was intense, with no guardrails and thousands of feet dropoff. We stopped at Julie's Banana Bread stand and also bought freshly grown/fried Tarot Chips! This roadside horse happily ate some apple. The Iao Needle was a worthwhile short hike to see: Our condo was ground-level, opening up to a lawn & pool and right next to a beach with decent snorkeling.: We went snorkeling four times, alternating playing with Cam on the beach: One highlight was seeing a swimming turtle at Maluaka Beach (near the Prince Hotel): One snorkeling trip was by catamaran boat to the popular Molokini Crater. Crystal clear water and a side dive to 20' deep using Snuba gear made for a fun morning. Cam enjoyed watching fish and daddy swim by in the glass viewing room. The poor guy was fairly seasick on the way back in when the water got very choppy. We checked out the Grand Wailea Resort in Waimea. Cam, his Cheerios, and 200 Koi all got along well.: There was a BLAZING sunset on evening that Linda caught with some artistic silhouetting: One night we had a fancy dinner at the Renaissance in Wailea. The sunset was not super spectacular but the outdoor venue was gorgeous. The new Maui Ocean Center was fantabulous! Cam (and us) especially loved the underwater viewing tunnel and spent an hour in there! We went to Big Beach one day. Cam tried his Stevie Wonder-at-the-beach impersonation, while Dave hit the waves with a boogie board, then HIT THE BEACH with his head when a big wave dumped him. We went to the Luau at the Maui Hilton. The food (especially all of the different meat) was excellent, and the fire-torch dancer guy was great. Cam melted down and we missed parts of the show though. SEE '06 OAHU for the rest of our Hawaii trip!
