Archived Sawleaf house pics are here No more DECK!!! In June '08, we tore down the unsafe upper deck, and the sagging lower deck. Check out these fun time lapse vids showing the all day demolition in a mere 4.5 minutes total:
We're still planning out the new back patio area. Goin' SOLAR!!! In July '06 we got a new solar photovoltaic system installed on the workshop roof! In August '06 we went live and no longer pay for electricity! We'll generate ~5,200,000 watt-hours every 12 months and reduce our CO2 usage by the equivalent of burning 1600 gallons of gasoline per year. BACKYARD REMODEL Fall 2005 We didn't use the brick patio next to the workshop much, so we decided to make it into a play yard for Cam! BEFORE: AFTER: Also, 'cause we don't have any shade trees in the back, our deck was often too warm to use. So we put up some Shade Sails (they should provide good summer afternoon coverage): Features of the play area: 2 swings, 1 bucket swing, slide, ladder, 'cargo net' for climbing, custom ramp, lower & upper platforms, balance beam, rock climbing wall, periscope, & steering wheel =) The whole project was a whole lot o' work! Here's what it took: Remove 440 brick pavers (8,000 lbs). Excavate 9" of dirt (and rocks, and roots)...35,000 lbs worth...darn stuff is heavy!: Put 3" of drainage gravel in place (6,000 lbs), concrete wall in place (5,000 lbs), brick retaining wall (1,000 lbs) in place. We made a small raised vegetable garden too. We bought a used play structure from someone on Craigslist. After bringing over the dozens of sections via large truck, Dave spent many hours refurbishing it (sand, fill, stain, build new parts, modify it to fit our little square of land): Next we add 6" of shredded rubber (1000 recycled tires) for safety cushioning, while beginning to assemble the play structure: and after 40+ hours of work and the very-much-appreciated help of Dan, Alson, Bryant, Perry, Carlton, and Nick, the structure came together! Planned upgrades for the future: Misting system, water spray for a pseudo-waterslide, and a water-balloon filling station in the upper fort!
BUNGALOW/WORKSHOP REMODEL Winter '04-'05 Dave needed some elbow room to work. The building in the back is a good place for him to stay out of trouble: Needed some work to make it habitable though... Walls, ceiling, lights, fans, carpet, and workbenches were added: Mudpie approves of his new territory. Might even let Dave use it sometimes!
